BOZNER PLAZA
A NEW DESTINATION IN INNSBRUCK
The Bozner Platz is a square located between the train station and the city center in Innsbruck. The square has two distinct functions: it serves as a thoroughfare for pedestrians, cyclists, and cars, and also as a place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
The proposed design for the square takes into account these two contrasting functions and aims to create a harmonious balance between activity and calmness. The design consists of two zones: an active outer zone that surrounds the square, and a quiet, green inner zone in the center.
The active outer zone is designed to increase the quality of the urban space and enhance the experience of pedestrians. A 10-meter-wide traffic-free zone is defined in front of the building facades to create more space for people to walk and for businesses to expand. This extended facade zone provides a vibrant atmosphere with plenty of space for sidewalk cafes, and free seating areas. The car lanes are pushed to the center of the square to free up space for pedestrians and cyclists. Bicycle parking facilities are also scattered throughout the outer zone, with a new bike station located in the south of the square.
On the south side of the square, a protected open space is created for public use. This area can be used for various events such as concerts, markets, or street festivals. It can also serve as a playground for children, while parents enjoy the nearby cafes and restaurants.
The quiet, green inner zone or "Plaza" is designed to provide a relaxing space in the heart of the city. The area surrounding the Rudolfsbrunnen fountain is expanded and enhanced with numerous trees, flowerbeds, and water features, creating a pleasant microclimate for visitors. A new water play feature is installed on the ground, providing refreshment and entertainment for visitors. The center of the Plaza remains open for free movement and serves as the main pedestrian route between the train station and the historic city center.
The planting scheme for the Plaza is designed with heat and drought tolerance in mind, using perennial plants with changing colors throughout the year. The flowerbeds are constructed with a special substrate that retains water and air, reducing the need for maintenance. The use of gravel also reduces weed growth and simplifies maintenance. The plantings are insect-friendly, making them a great addition to the urban ecosystem.
Overall, the proposed design aims to create a harmonious balance between activity and relaxation, enhancing the quality of the urban space and creating a vibrant and welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
