DODECAHEDRON

CHART Art Fair 2018

For a long time modular building blocks has consisted primarily of boxes and triangles. While both excel as modules, the grids they visually leave behind dominate our environment and gentrify our cities. DODECAHEDRON is a simple modular system based on its namesake and it offers an alternative to quad and triangle based grids. A dodecahedron is the only geometric shape outside of cubes and 3-sided pyramids that has identical angles in all corners - meaning that ! single joint is the foundation for the entire modular system.

The variety of constructions made with DODECAHEDRON challenges the form and aesthetic of traditional modular designs and offers an open platform for participants to explore and imagine new structures and spaces.

The proposed pavilion consists of a series of semi-enclosed volumes forming an open and adaptable space that can easily be configured to fit a future program. The enclosed volumes all have planar sides which creates optimal conditions for covering the interior space - for the CHART Art Fair reused sail cloth is providing the necessary protection. All joints are assembled from sheets of plywood and can be scaled and adapted to fit the material and size for the given project. Afterwards the joints can be flat packed, stored and reused for new configurations.
