VINDBLIKKET

VISUALIZING THE WIND IN HIRTZBACH

The danish title for the art piece, Vindblikket, is suggestive of the ephemeral nature of wind as a constantly changing force and the difficulty of capturing it, as it will be gone in a blink of a wind. Wind is by itself invisible but through interaction with its surroundings its patterns and behavior can be captured – and its natural force harvested for electrical gain. The movement of leaves, branches, waves and fields are all heavenly affected by and visualizing wind.

In Denmark the landscape is in a direct dialogue with wind. Through the myriad of windmills dotting every little ridge on the pancake flat terrain, an almost national interface exists for looking at and utilizing wind. By establishing an interface for what can not be seen, the invisible can become a reference point, and the reference point a foundation for change.

The installation, Vindblikket, creates such a reference point and interface in Hirtzbach. It consist of roughly 2500 of identically sized aluminium fabric pieces (each consisting of 45x45 3mm circles - in total more than 5 million), which together, like individual pixels, creates a screen that is able to recapture the literal and phenomenal motion of wind.

The animated aluminium fabric is in a constant state of motion, reflecting the surroundings and catching its light - merging Hirtzbach with the wind. Like cloud watching, the movements across the walls can inspire and provoke thought and curiosity about the energy surrounding us. It is our hope that the myriad of wind patterns displayed on the wall can function as an initiator for conversations surrounding wind, energy and nature. And that the synergy between nature and the art piece puts the fragility of our co-existence into question.
